Firm Supports Diversity Initiative
This summer Goldberg Katzman again will participate in the Capital Area Managing Partners' (CAMP) Diversity Initiative. This year marks the sixth year for the CAMP Program. Attorney Royce Morris coordinates the program at Goldberg Katzman. Through this program, minority first-year law students are provided the opportunity to engage in "substantive legal work" alongside a mentoring attorney. Interns experience day-to-day life at the firm as well as attend client meetings, depositions, mediations and other hearings. Interns also are given research and drafting assignments.

Morris, Lock Recognized as "Super Lawyers"
Philadelphia Magazine has named Royce L. Morris and Joshua D. Lock "Super Lawyers" for 2010 for Pennsylvania. This honor applies to only 5% of attorneys in Pennsylvania and is bestowed on attorneys who have "achieved a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement."

Recipients are determined through a multi-stage process that takes nine months and involves surveying every attorney in the state who has been in practice for five years or more. The final awards are then made by an independent panel. Recipients are publicized statewide through numerous publications.

Kogan Elected Chair of PBA’s Section of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law
Arnold B. Kogan was elected Chair of the Section of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law of the Pennsylvania Bar Association at the Section’s Annual Meeting held in Hershey on May 13, 2010, in conjunction with the PBA’s Annual Meeting. Mr. Kogan also participated as a speaker in the Section’s program on Financing 2010 dealing with issues and financing of commercial property in the current real estate climate. Mr. Kogan addressed the issues related to incomplete construction, the reduced demand due to high unemployment both nationwide and in Pennsylvania, and the looming defaults in the commercial mortgages due to poor underwriting and the large number of performing loans reaching maturity that are unable to be refinanced due to the loss of market value and increased underwriting standards requiring greater equity in the property.

Kogan Again Testifies Before House on HB 1322
Arnold B. Kogan, as the head of the Section’s Task Force on HB 1322 relating to Adverse Possession, worked with the PA House Urban Affairs Committee and the Housing Alliance to modify the bill to protect property rights while providing a tool to prevent and reduce blight. Kogan worked with the Committee’s staff to increase the protection of the property owners by requiring the adverse possessor who wants to take advantage of the shorter 10-year period provided in the bill to file a quiet title action giving the record owner one year in which to file an ejectment action and prove that owner’s status as record owner and thus cure (stop) the adverse possession. Kogan also worked with the Committee’s staff to narrow the scope of the bill to exclude common interest ownership property (condominiums, cooperatives and planned communities). The revised bill remains limited to single-family, residential properties on one acre or less, continuously occupied for at least 10 years by the adverse possessor. Kogan testified before the Committee on the revised bill and explained the changes and how property owners are protected under this revision. The bill was approved by the Committee as revised. Kogan also presented the Section’s position in support of the revised bill to the PBA Board of Governors and House of Delegates and secured their support.
